Best route/s from VA to Hiwasse, GA

We may want to travel to Hiwassee, GA in mid June. Streets and Trips recommends (from my home in South-Central VA) I-40 west from Greensboro thru Asheville, NC then onto Rt. 19, 441, and other curvy-looking roads into Hiwassee. Doesn't look like many other good alternatives and I know this is mountainous country. Looking for any suggestions for best routes for the motorhome.

thanks.

Just a suggestion and it is not such a bad route. We have traveled this way several times. From Ashville on I-40 west toward Waynesville. In Waynesville, head toward the Sylva/Dillsboro area. I thnk that is 74 (good wide road) At Dillsboro turn left on US441 toward Franklin. There is a couple of mountains that are a little steep, but keep your speed slow coming down and you will be OK. Follow 441 and it will turn under a bridge in Franklin south toward Dillard. Follow 441 south thru Dillard to downtown Clayton. Turn right in Clayton and follow it into Hiawasee.
The first couple of miles out of Clayton are a little crooked, but very doable in any size MH and towed. The rest is just normal mountain driving - a few up and downs and turns. No switchbacks and ultra steep grades.
Let us know if you need further, we do that area often.

If you are looking for a flatter route take a look at Interstate 85 all the way to exit one in SC then rt 11 north to westminster and 76 to clayton and on to hiawassee. greenville to hiawassee is 297 miles vs 340 by going the interstate 40 route as stated above. I'm only replying because wife and I left mooresville Nc last fall and basically took this same trip. I found by going in from the south it was a lot less mountainess but going home the northern route it was beautiful but a much much harder drive.

correction 278 miles on the northern route so distance really isn't the factor
