Best Rte Bakersfield to Redlands, CA

Would it make any sense to drive CA SR 58 to US 395 then south to I-15 or just stick with Google recommended SR 14 to Lancaster/ Palmdale then SR 138 to I-15? I have driven US 395 north of SR 58 and never have travelled either SR 14 or 138. Thanks for your suggestions.

We have done this trip every way possible - just to see...
From the options listed, guessing the 5 to the 210 is off the table (fastest when there is no traffic in the L.A. area)?

And, just to highlight...east on 58 over the Tehachapi pass is a L-O-N-G climb.

So, the route using SR138 is shorter by about 3 miles, BUT 138 is literally a roller-coaster and is undivided hwy for a long distance through the dips = risk of head-on. The view out the window is nice (pretty mountains on the right and little villages/restaurants/some sightseeing stuff along the roadway).

The route using 58 to 395 is rather boring, but very safe.

It's all in what you want.
Safe travels

Thanks,

We do the 5 to 210 all the time. I am going to give 99 a try this time due to so many recommendations including IIRC yours.

We usually drive from SW Oregon all the way to Coachella in two days. This time we were looking for a second night stay and have decided on either Orange Grove or River Run in Bakersfield. The navigator is arguing for the regular 5 to 210 route, after 99. I thought since we were already on SR 58 maybe it would make sense to continue. We did Tehachapi in November and have done it before. US395 sounds more to my liking. Not really into adventure motorhome driving.

We were going to stay near Santa Clarita but with the methane leak I think we will pass. Really hard to find anywhere to camp in the south Central Valley along I5. We prefer an RV park rather than boondocking.

The 58 route is definitely what I'd recommend. We retired out of Temecula. Relatives in Redding. I've tried every way possible between the two. In an RV, going over Techachapi is best. Both RV parks you mentioned are excellent.

Biosensai,

Thanks, SR58 to US 395 worked out great as did Orange Grove RV park. This may be our new way into the SoCal desert. We drove down 99 from Stockton south and found that interesting and enjoyable as well. Done the I5 trip way too many times.

At the right time of year, 46 Wasco has FLOWERS to smell all the way to 99, then hit 58. I have crossed over on a bunch of those roads, two lane but wide and lonely for the farmers.
