My 2 cents?....we arrived a few days AFTER Labor Day....the place was empty.
It was great...most places we stopped we were either alone or there were one or two other campers.
You also have to understand most buildings in Yellowstone at this time will be closed...BUT not having to fight the crowds was awesome....warm days and cool nights...and very little traffic...we love traveling in the fall...JMHO

Early to mid June so you can see more babies. Stay in the park if you can. Can't spend to much time in the park there is so much to see and do.
ENJOY

Unless you really need to see the babies I like Sept. Just after the kids are in school. The elk will be bulging and the bears are still putting on fat and the buffalo are EZ sees. The colors are changing and the nights might start getting nippy. As to route come up through the south and do the Tetons. you might be able to stay in both parks as the volumne of people has dropped but Grizzly is good and a good starting point for the toad adventure.

Got to agree with September.
As Aussies we don't get out much but have been to Yellowstone 4 times for a week each.
No traffic Buggaling Elk, still bears to be seen.
Great very settled weather each visit.
Can't wait to do a January trip - it's on the bucket list
