Last year we drove onto Long Island from the south via I-278 to I-495 (Long Island Expressway). Some of the roadways, especially through Brooklyn, were just awful.

This year we will be headed to L.I. again. This time, however, we will be driving north on I-81 then (maybe) east on I-80, which becomes I-95. I'd drive over the George Washington bridge through the Bronx, down I-678, over the Bronx Whitestone bridge and then pick up the LIE (I-495)

For those of you with experience driving there, do you prefer this route? Or should I come up I-95 to I-278 up to I-495?
