Big Bend, TX to Ruidoso, NM - 285???

We are in Lajitas, TX (near Big Bend NP) and have reservations at KOA in Carlsbad - but since the elevator is out, may pass on Carlsbad and go to our next destination, Ruidoso, NM. I hear that 285 from Fort Stockton to Carlsbad is horrible with pot holes and oil field traffic that doesn't care about a nice motorhome. Is that true? If so, would you do I-10 to El Paso and then up 54 to Alamagordo?

If you're able to walk decently, I surely wouldn't pass up Carlsbad because of the elevator. The walk is all paved and goes up gradually. It's really not a long one. Stop and rest occasionally and take in the details. It's very doable. You're passing so close, do hope you stop.

For a route from Lajitas, take 118 to Alpine then Hwy 90 to Van Horn and pick up 54 into Guadalupe Nat'l Park then 62/180 into Carlsbad. It a good, easy route. Stop at Guadalupe's Visitor Center for a look-see.

I live off of HWY 54, and can tell you 54 to almogordo is a nice road

If you decide to take the 10 to EP, if it is rush hour, take loop 375 to 54 to by pass the city traffic, but sometime the loop can get bottled up too around 400pm when the Soldiers from ft bliss get off.

So plan accordingly

Thanks for all the advice, I appreciate it. Decided to go on to Ruidoso and do Carlsbad on the way back to New Orleans in the fall.
