Blue Ridge Parkway - w/43' Class A & a toad ?
We are in Pigeon Forge, TN and heading to Staunton, VA.... the Blue Ridge Parkway runs the entire route. I've heard its a beautiful route, but looking at the map, it looks like it could also become quite tedious, but really I have no idea. We're considering making the run in two days.
We are wondering if the road is a good one for a large rig such as ours and if the switchbacks are comfortable or if they may be a bit too tight and perhaps tiring.... we would greatly appreciate your thoughts on this! Thank you.

That, IMHO, is a road made for RVs. Many pullouts, pretty scenery, nice pavement, curves are not to tight.
Take your time and enjoy the views. Plenty of RV parks along the way, not far off the road.
I lived in Asheville, NC for 2yrs, and drove it many times.

I'm very interested as well. I have a 45 ft toy hauler and would like to take the Blue Ridge Parkway from Asheville, NC to head towards Richmond, VA. Sorry, don't want to hijack your thread, just interested in responses.

I have traveled the BP on several trips but I would not want to take my 42ftr that far on it. You are looking for a direct route and there isn't one. You would be lucky to run 45-50 mph. This will KILL your fuel milage and time. I'm not saying you can't but I would not. There is a section of it called the "Dragons Tail", and the motorcycles love it! Over 200 curves in 14 miles.

I can't say you wouldn't be able to drive it but the question is, would you enjoy it? Many curves to address and if it were me I would pass with a 42' coach. JMHO

We did the parkway last fall in the toad, took 5 days. I think we saw 2 or 3 class A MHs on the parkway. The speed limit is mostly 35 and 45 mph with many curves and hills. We set the MH up in a campground near the parkway and moved every other day. I would not want to drive it in the MH, but thats just me.
Have fun and take your time.

I LOVE the BRP. A national treasure. Head out there any chance I get from Richmond.
Would NOT recommend it as the route for a 43' tag with a toad. And would not be fair to the line of non-RV'ers behind you.
It's better in a 1961 Austin Healy.....or somethng w/ 2 wheels.

Beautiful route as long as you're in a hurry. Have had some folks trying to run over me when I was driving the speed limit and looking at the scenery. Use the pullouts a lot and enjoy your trip. Plan for several days to get from one end to the other.

The Tail Of The Dragon is not on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is situated on US-129 between NC and TN. It most definitely is not a road for MH's with 318 turns in 11 miles.
The BRP is a beautiful road also. We have taken the TOAD, and before that a 1 ton dually for sight seeing. I have also seen MH's on the BRP, but I have to agree with others that it is better to find a spot, park the MH and tour in the TOAD. Just a personal preference. There is an access road, and I believe it is number 211 that will white nuckle you if you are using it. Also there is at least on overpass that may be a height restriction for your rig. Check low clearances before travel.
Happy trails.

Definitely would not go east on Rt 60 from Lexington and Buena Vista over/up to the BRP with anything larger than a Minni Winnie.
But it's a great climb on that route!!
Another favorite, if you are passing thru, is the town of Lexington VA and VMI and Washington and Lee Univ. R E Lee chapel, VMI campus and the Gen'l George C Marshall Library and museum are must see's.

I drove the BRP a few years ago in a 28 ft Class A with a toad. We did okay, one place had washed out on a tight step curve and it was being repaired so it was one lane only at that point. We made it through, but just barely. When I drove it, there was a section that was limited to RV length. I don't know if that still applies. I now own a 38 ft rig, and I would Not attempt to drive it now. Park and take the toad. Definitely something you don 't want to miss. It is rated as one of the top 10 most scenic drives I the US.

The Dragon is NOT part of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Dragon is a part of US 129 near Maryville, Tn. On a motorcycle it is a real challenge. No recommended for RVs or trailers of any stripe.

Thanks for the info about VMI. Our son is considering it for college and we have a tour set for June 28th. May go a day early to see the sights.
