What is the best route? I headed south from Lewiston a couple of years ago. I remember going down those hills. I'm not looking forward to going up them, especialling towing.

Going up Whitebird (the biggest climb) on 95 is given, you can't avoid it unless you go way over into Oregon and up. Basically, the choice you have is if you want to go over to Payette and up US 95, or use Id 55. Either route will give you about the same elevation changes. The closest route depends on where you're starting from Boise or Caldwell, but 55 is crooked.

Anytime we've gone either way, my brother starts from or goes to Caldwell, I from Horseshoe Bend. He uses 95, I use 55, and we meet or split at New Meadows.

We used 55/95 out of Boise with a overnight stop in Whitebird, interesting place. I prefer the upgrades to the long steep downgrades. You should not have any problems with 55/95 if you watch your speed.
