Planning trip from Knoxville, TN to Boone NC late July -- would like tips on best routes, what type of grades to expect to encounter, general travel tips for this area of the Smokies? thanks...

I think the best route for that trip is I-40 to Morganton. The take hwy 64 to Lenoir then hwy 321 to Boone. Some curvy mountains as you cross into NC but not a problem at all. 4 lanes, just take your time. It's very doable.

thanks for the information. I am a newbie and have no experience with mountainous terrain in a 24,000 # vehicle. Fortunately, I have no toad.
