Bowling Green, Ky to 95 in Maine.

Route suggestions avoiding the big cities without being on a 2 lane country road. Thanks.

RBAYBE: I am heading almost that exact same route...except I will stop in New Hampshire and not travel onto Maine. Here it is the route that I will take for your review. I take away that certain cities can not be avoided...but Louisville and Cincinnati /Columbus/Cleveland areas can be bypassed.
In Louisville you take the I265 bypass from I65 south of the city directly to the I71N exit....I275 bypasses Cincy...and I forgot the bypasses for Columbus...but there is one too. the rest of the trip is really uneventful. the drive thru the southern tier of Penn and NY is nice (fuel up in Ohio)

I am starting in Louisville KY...
I-71 N - Go 105 miles (89min, 50sec)
7. Take ramp right for I-70 East / I-71 North toward Cleveland / Wheeling -
Go 1.8 miles (1min, 59sec)
8. At exit 101A, take ramp left for I-71 North toward Cleveland - Go 101.3
miles (85min, 14sec)
9. At exit 209A, take ramp right for US-224 East / I-76 East toward Akron /
Lodi - Go 18.3 miles (16min, 12sec)
10. Take ramp right for I-76 East toward Akron - Go 1.8 miles (2min, 9sec)
11. Take ramp right for I-76 East / I-77 South toward Akron - Go 3.3 miles
(3min, 22sec)
12. Keep straight onto I-76 E - Go 36.8 miles (31min, 31sec)
13. Keep straight onto I-80 E - Go 276.9 miles (232min, 29sec)
14. At exit 260B, take ramp left for I-81 North toward Wilkes-Barre - Go 0.5
miles (1min, 15sec)
15. Keep straight onto I-81 N - Go 35 miles (32min, 35sec)
16. At exit 187, take ramp right for I-84 East / I-380 South toward Milford
/ Mt Pocono - Go 4.4 miles (4min, 11sec)
17. Keep left onto I-84 E - Go 91.4 miles (78min, 1sec)
18. Keep right to stay on I-84 E / RT-52 E - Go 37.7 miles (33min, 27sec)
19. Keep right to stay on I-84 E / US-6 E - Go 42.7 miles (38min, 50sec)
20. Keep right to stay on I-84 E - Go 55.6 miles (50min, 2sec)
21. Take ramp right for I-90 East toward Boston / Worcester - Go 11.7 miles
(10min, 4sec)
22. At exit 10, take ramp right for I-290 East toward Worcester - Go 8.6
miles (10min, 21sec)
23. At exit 19, take ramp right for I-190 North toward Fitchburg / Holden -
Go 19.5 miles (16min, 36sec)
24. Keep straight onto RT-2 W / George Stanton Hwy - Go 0.8 miles (0min,
46sec)
25. At exit 32, take ramp right toward Lunenburg / Leominster - Go 0.1 miles
(0min, 9sec)

suggestion for a minor change to Gocoffeer's directions which will eliminate a few hills and possible heavy traffic in the Wilkes-Barre Scranton complex.

At step 14, stay on I-80 for another 34 miles to I-380 north. I-380 north to I-84.

When you cross the Delaware River at Matamoris, Pa., the first exit is actually in New Jersey. Might be the cheapest gas in the area as NJ has lower taxes.

I looked at Mapquest, and you can go the northerly route as shown above. But since you're so close to Nashville, I'd send you the southerly route with some modifications to keep you out of the big cities. I have traveled extensively throughout TN, VA, PA, NY, CT and as far as coastal ME last year.

1. Catch I-40 going east of Nashville through Knoxville and go north on I-81 into Virginia.
2. Keep on I-81 all the way to Scranton, PA where you turn east on I-84. (I'm keeping you out of Washington, DC-NY City areas.) The Shenandoah Valley is breathtaking in beauty anyway.
3. Follow I-84 thru Waterbury, CT and go northeast thru Hartford, CT and turn right on I-90.
4. Work your way to Worchester, MA and turn east toward Marlborough. Turn north on what appears to be Hwy 4 and work your way toward the coast east of Manchester, NH. (I'm not going to get into the details of Hwy numbers.) This is all to avoid Boston--50 miles south of Manchester.

All of the roads noted above are controlled access highways.

We went as far as the road go in Nova Scotia, 1000 miles on the other side of Boston. We absolutely loved the maritime Maine communities, especially Camden, ME.
