CA to North Carolina I-70 in October or another route?

We are just finishing a round trip on I40, CA to NC and back to CA. We didn't love I-40. It wasn't as bad as some folks posted but we will be heading back to NC again in October. We did 400 plus miles a day going east and going west we did 350. Thinking 300 miles a day in October. How's the I-70 route? Any great places to stay not too far off 70? Is there a better route?

I-70 is a good route. Through the CO mountains, you can - possibly - encounter snow in October. Be sure to check the weather. Through Denver, I-70 can be slow going. There will be construction ongoing there as well.

Lots of places are available just off I-70. Start with the James Cobb State Park in Fruita, CO, just off the interstate, then gauge your travel times through Colorado, and you'll find the rest.

Hope that helps - a bit.

In which state will you leave I-70? We are currently at Wolfies Campground off I-70 in zanesville, ohio for an overnight . Just been here a couple of hours, but campers are nice and campground is clean. We're in a pull through and it is fairly level. They have WiFi and a website.
I don't really know what you consider bad, but I really don't like 70 through indiana, but I have to take it, as that's where we live. Bumpy, potholes, uneven pavement on much of it. But by comparison, it's smooth as silk in most of Ohio.

Wanabes:

We would take 80 from CA and pickup 70 in Utah until Missouri and then head south east to Tennessee and then finally NC. So we would not make it all the way to Ohio. Well at least not this trip. Thanks for the info though. Enjoy camping.
