California Mountain Highway 99

Has anyone driven Mountain Highway 99 in the southern part of the Sierras from California Hot Springs to Isabella Lake in a 40' motorhome? We would like to drive it in the middle of May if possible towing a Jeep Liberty. Hard to find info on the Internet.

Thanks for any responses I may get in advance!!

I've driven a couple times in my truck. It's a pretty tight windy mountain road. Don t know that I would want to take my motorhome on it.

Highway 99? No Highway 99 at Lake Isabella.

The only highway close to Lake Isabella is CA-178. Highway 99 goes through the central valley, it's not a mountain highway.

Thanks for the reply. Is 99 any worse than Hwy 49 from Mariposa to Coulterville if you have driven it? We did it this spring and it was a lot of tight turns but doable.

Highway 99 is almost all flat land no tight windy curves from where it splits from the highway 5 just south of Bakersfield to where it rejoins the highway 5 at Red Bluff. Highway 99 is no where close to Mariposa or Coulterville.

Mountain Highway 99 along the Kern River. https://goo.gl/maps/CctZ3Lqsr5B2

I would suggest you not take a forty footer down through on that road. Find a place to camp and explore with the toad.

hwy 49 is a real highway, built to state highway standards. Mtn Hwy 99 is a back country access rd, a step above a dirt/gravel road, with narrow lanes, no shoulders, the river bank on one side and rock walls on the other side. If you met headon with another oversized vehicle, one of you would have to back up for a mile to find a spot wide enough to pass. Its used to get to fishing, camping, hiking spots. none of the camping along it is suitable for a 40 ft motorhome.

No one besides the map maker refers to it that way, since its always confused with the real Hwy 99. The locals refer to it as the Kern River Hwy.
