OK so this post may explode, but why can't the overpass makers line up with the road for an even entrance and exit off the overpass, I have hit my head on the ceiling of my truck, where am I ? I'm in the San Jose to Pala Alto area, so thats 280, 85, 87, 101, the one mentioned where I hit the ceiling of my cab is on the 85 coming north from Morgan Hill, theirs a stretch of north 101 where the 87 dumps into the 101, the road is well wavy, bouncy and looks to be just paved not to long ago, I though it was my wheel getting ready to fall off, so go ahead and vent with your worst road storie

I finally found a way to get to Northern California without beating myself and my rig to death on I5. I'm taking US395 north until I cut across to the Redding area where I will head for Hayfork. Then I'll continue to take US highways as much as I can until I get back to Portland.

395 is a damn nice road. Smoooooooth.

395 is an excellent way to get through California. We don't do interstates.

Been using 395 since the early '70's to fish the Eastern Sierra. I am appalled that it is still not all multilane divided highway. Two things to be aware of using it. First is that it is often quite congested on Friday & Sunday afternoons as my fellow So Cal weekend warriors escape. Second is the wind. Lake Crowley, near Bishop, is notorious for afternoon winds creating dangerous conditions. Those conditions can be dangerous for RV'ers also. Years back, one summer weekday, I was driving a 26' Class C pulling an 18' Sea Ray mid-afternoon. Gust of wind from the west fully moved me about 4'. My preteen son thought it was pretty cool. His dad, not so much. Later that day we caught a surprise heavy thunderstorm further south near Victorville. Traffic came virtually to a standstill. Keep an eye on the weather & avoid the weekend if you can.

That would ruin the beauty of the area. Many more would be driving it and it would become another Hwy 99.

Had the same trouble last year both going and coming back from Phoenix. Even 99 wasn't much better.
BTW, I have 30 years experience in highway construction and getting the end of a bridge aligned vertically with the road is a never ending problem. The roadbed settles, and bridge doesn't. The bridge settles the roadway doesn't. Traffic pounds out the pavement, they patch it and it just happens over and over.
Plus it costs money to maintain a road and CA doesn't have any for road repairs now.

If you have to go north or south nearer the center of the state or to end up closer to the coast, 99 is still better than I-5. The road work is slowly finishing and a lot more of it is 3 lanes vs I-5's 2 lanes all the way. And there are more and nicer places to stop along the way.

Just drove 99N from Bakersfield to Chico. Terrible washboard for most of the way. Good nearing Sacratomato and north.
I had to slow down to 40 mph going through Merced it was so rough in the right lane.
Kalifornia needs to stop paying so much for their homeless and illegals and more on their roads.

Oh, Please. There are just as many terrible roads in every other state in the country. As well as just as many homeless and immigrants, too.
