Before fuel was in the $4 range I used to avoid toll roads if I possible could.

Since fuel prices have gone up ... I look at the "extra" cost to avoid the toll ... and compare it to the cost of the toll ... for me my fuel costs are roughly $0.50 per mile ... so if I have to drive 40 extra miles to avoid the toll and the toll is $20 or less ... I take the toll road

What is your final Eastward destination? Do you want to go to "downtown" Chicago.???
I have lived in the southwest suburbs of Chicago most of my life. There are about 10 million people within a 50 mile radius of "downtown", so be prepared for congestion.
A good rule of thumb is to drive 300 miles/day, or stop by 3:00 PM..
Your trip will be fantastic. So much to see & do on your selected route. Have fun, enjoy, make memories.
Keep us posted on your adventures.
