Just read some reviews of campgrounds in Dubuque, IA. Many of them seem to be "thumbs down" by reviewers.

I've heard that the city owns and operates a campground on an island in the Mississippi but, haven't found any reviews or other comments about it.

We plan on being in that city for a few days near the end of April and would like some objective comments and/or recommendations.

Thanks!

On US-20, west of Dubuque, turn south on Swiss Valley Road. (Approx 7 miles from downtown) Follow signs to campground.

County Park - great family park off of the beaten path. Good place to visit Dyersville (Field of Dreams) from. Beautiful, hilly, farming country.

Thanks Red T! I guess that must be the one I heard about that's run by the county. Would you by chance happen to have a telephone number?

Thanks for the trouble!

Looks like a great site. Two things make me a bit wary: no 50 amps and no reservations accepted.

Freddy,
I can't give you any personal recommendations as we haven't stayed in that area. However, a search of Good Sam campground info provided the following locations around Dubuque:
~Rustic Barn Campground & RV Park, Kieler, WI, 30/50 amp (about 5 miles north across the river), 608-568-7797.
~American Marine At the Dubuque Yacht Club, 30 amp only, 563-556-7708.
~Swiss Valley Park appears to be 5-7 miles SW of Dubuque.

Happy traveling!

So, why would you need 50 amps in April?

Can you think of a reason I might not need 50 amps?

A perceived 50A requirement is a self imposed limitation. Even when the temps are in the low 100's, I can cool my U35 Itasca. I can't run both compressors and a microwave at the same time but that isn't a restriction, only an inconvenience.

April in Iowa is very temperate (normally). I got married in Calumet, Iowa on Apr. 21, 1962. The temp that day were in the 90's. Four days before, there was a 11" blizzard.

One man's inconvenience is another man's restriction.

But, to allay your concerns, my wife is a baker. She might need to run the convection oven, a baker's mixer and the a/c at the same time.

And, why would I want 30 amps at some primative rv park when I can get 50 amps for the same price at a more modern park?

I consider any campground that is more than 15-20 yrs old whose owners haven't taken any measures to upgrade facilities to be primative.

Happy to be the source of your new found insight.
