Carlsbad, Artesia, Alamogordo, Las Cruses NM route

I will be staying at the Carlsbad KOA and traveling to Catalina State Park just north of Tucson. I was looking at Hwy 285N to Artesia then Hwy 82W to Alamogordo and Hwy 72W to Las Cruses. I’ll be driving a 06 Monaco Diplomat, pulling a 2016 F150. That’s a 500 mile day so not much time for sight seeing. My intention was to miss the El Paso traffic. I looked at the route using Google Earth and can’t see any problems, but thought I would ask some opinions. I found that the tunnel near Cloudcroft has plenty of headroom.
Thanks in advance.
Doug

Do you mean Hwy70 west to Last Cruces?

We did this exact route last year, except in 2 days. Stayed at the KOA in Las Cruces - very nice campground with a nice view of the city from above. There's a pistachio farm in alamagordo that has the world's largest pistachio... try their "Atomic" pistachio brittle. And of course white sands is worth a drive-through. We also drove up to Sunspot - it's an observatory at the top of the mountain overlooking white sands. Nice views.

There is a long hard pull up through the mountains as you pass into Arizona. Watch your temps... other than that, this is a nice drive.

-cheers

From Artesia via 82/70 to Las Cruces is very good except you will have a steep, curvy downhill from Cloudcroft to Alamogordo.... 16 miles at 6% grade. Get into low gear at the top before you get going down and you won't have to use your brakes.

I-10 to Tucson is a easy drive but be aware of potential dust storms around the New Mexico/Arizona border. Catalina State Park is very nice and great hiking. Enjoy!

Another option is Hwy 180 from Carlsbad. When you near ElPaso watch for the signs for loop 335 (I think that # is right) and take it over Trans Mountain. You miss the demolition derby and 180 is quite scenic and lonely. We came that way from east Texas to AZ again this year as we enjoy it.
