Catskills to Point Lookout, MD (just below Washington,DC)

We will be driving a 34 FT Class A towing a Honda Fit & want the easiest route even if not the shortest.

We are considering I-81 to I-66 to to 17 to 301 to avoid congestion around big cities even though it is 150 miles longer than a more direct route skirting the big cities.

What do you think?

Thanks,
Cass

Looking at the map I can tell you Rt 15 from Harrisburg down to RT 29 will shave a bunch of miles and mostly be clear sailing. You do get into some traffic near DC but it is manageable.

FWIW I'd also look at Rt 15 from Harrisburg to I-70 East out of Fredericksburg to Rt 32 South to Rt 3 or on to Rt 301. Mostly controlled access and not part the North South path between DC and Baltimore so it might shave a lot of miles for a bit of traffic.

Now that there are a few more routes on the table let's see what the local folks say...

You do realize Rt. 301 won't get you to Point Lookout? You'll have to get on Rt. 5 in Waldorf, Md. When down that way try and get some of the corn the Amish grow. You should be able to find roadside stands on Rt. 5. The corn they grow is silver king, and man it's almost too good.

I live just south of Harrisburg. 15 is a pretty easy drive. Easiest connection from 81 to 15 is 581E to 15S.

Another option is 81 to 70 to 32east to 301. 32 around the upper area of DC was new to us but used it just the other day to get out of FT Meade and head north west. Great drive. East bound will dump you over on 301

I've been on most of the roads between Harrisburg, PA and Point Lookout, MD.

In the MH, I'd take I83 to the Balt Beltway to I97 to US301 to MD5 (Waldorf) to Point Lookout. I don't like taking the coach on highways that aren't divided.

I wouldn't take US15 because it has two way traffic in most of Virginia. US 17 in Fredericksburg isn't an easy route either, it goes through the city and has several traffic lights and turns. I would take MD 5 instead of MD4 because the Thomas Johnson Bridge has two way traffic.

"81 to 70 to 32east to 301. 32 around the upper area of DC"
I haven't taken this route. It might be a good choice as well.

Balt parkway is a mess. All the roads around DC are since this past winter. The route I posted is really simple and direct. 32 is in great shape and was an easy drive. You will encounter traffic near FT Meade and NSA starting at 2pm but nothing like the other routes. 301 will have traffic afternoons. 17 at Fredericksburg is just plain awful. I would not drive 15 in VA. Traffic and lots of 2 lane
We drove the posted route out of Ft Meade headed to Morgantown. 4 hours including 30 minutes for lunch. Started st 9:30am. The bridge on 301 into VA is really a peace of cake. And I don't drive over 60mph

Oh, and make sure you have mosquito repellent. They can be pretty ferocious this time of year at Point Lookout.
