I will be in the Bryce Canyon/Zion area and would like to travel to Yosemite. I have a 2008 Ford F350 and a 3055RL Bighorn in tow.
Can anyone tell me if the route from Cedar City, Utah through Caliente and Tonopah is doable for a rig like mine? I am looking for a more direct route rather than return to Salt Lake City and going by I80 to Reno.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

we traveled that route on a motorcycle several years ago. it is a good 2 lane road where people go really fast. there is not much traffic. there was supposed to be a gas station at warm springs but it had just burned down.
rachel is an interesting stop. there is a diner there that is extra-terrestrial. there is a mailbox for et near there. the diner serves very good burgers and pie. they have UFO stuff for sale. i think you can still park your rig there over night.
your rig shouldn't have any trouble with the road. if you have mechanical trouble, cell phones don't work, cb radios are spotty, and ranches are few and far between. carry a full water tank and fuel tank. aside from that, go for it!

Like Dan said it is a two lane road but a good road. Any horse you see between Cedar City and Caliente are probably going to be wild, and there are some ragged horses out there. Also be sure to check out the little cemetary there in Pioche and if you got the time, or better yet check out the whole town, worth the visit. Cathedral Gorge is also worth checking out and both are not that far out of the way unless you are in a hurry.

Thank you for your input. For some reason I thought part of the route would be through the Sierra mountains and was concerned about steep grades. But after today's foray from Moab to Bryce Canyon through the Grand Staircase Ecalade NP along SR 24 and 12 where we climbed the summit at 9,600 feet some of it 14 to 18 % grades, I guess I don't need to worry.

Wasn't 12 a wonderful drive!! Especially Hogs Back

If you are going into Yosemite, you will be traveling up Tioga Pass road. Highway 120. You will have no problem climbing the grade, just watch the weather. It can close down temporarily at anytime now.

There is a nice campground at Lee Vining (stop and see Mono Lake)if you want to stop before the pass. June Lake just to the south is pretty with campgrounds there too.
