On our trip to the Grand Canyon we are thinking of coming back by way of Chama, NM because we want to take the train ride there. I'm wondering if anyone has any info on the RV camping choices there. Also, does anyone know if there are any doggie day care or kennels in the area? (I could NOT leave the babies in the motorhome for 6 hours.)

There are two nice campgrounds there that we have stayed at, Rio Chama ,575 756 2303,which is up by the railroad and the train goes right by the RV park and is wooded. The other is Little Creel,575 756 2382, a bit south and is right on the river. Ask for a River site, they are rusic but nice. They even have a deck with a BBQ overlooking the river. As for the train ride. My suggestion is to take the train to the lunch stop which is half way and take the bus or train back to Chama. The ride into Antonito gets pretty boring after awhile. It gets out of the mountains and is not nearly as pretty as the part from Chalma to Osier (the lunch stop).
Can't help you with the critters but maybe the RV park people have some info. Have a wonderful trip. The train ride is great !

There is a very nice state park a bit south of Chama, Heron Lake State Park.
Don't know about any kennels in the area...we have a dog, too, so didn't take the train ride because it was too long to leave the dog alone. Not saying there isn't one in the area someplace, just that we never checked.

Thanks for the suggestions.......will check into them, and maybe there is a kennel at one of the parks.......otherwise, I guess we will have to forget the train ride. I just won't leave the babies alone that long. The suggestion to take it only so far as Osier sounds like a great idea, though. How long does that leg of it take, I wonder?
