From I81 right past Harrisburg, PA, take I78 East into NJ. Then take I287 North and that will loop you around the city to the Tappen Zee Bridge over the Hudson.

Stay on I287 onto I95 right above NYC and follow I95 through CT into RI.

Tappen Zee Bridge - is that an expensive toll bridge?

Your other choices are the George Washington Bridge which brings your through the heart of NYC. Or the I84 Bridge which takes you too far North where you'll burn more than $23.75 in extra fuel.
