Funny you should ask.
It was our first "big trip" with our 41' DP that we stopped at the Cherokee NC KOA on our second night out. It was also my first attempt at towing our Subaru Outback for an extended distance. Before we left on this 5,000 mile trip, I had only towed it home from the service center that had installed the toad braking system. At the point we approached the Cherokee, I had about 500 miles experience towing.
It was GREAT!!! We made it into the KOA without difficulty and enjoyed 3 days of exploring the area; even drove "The Tail of the Dragon" (with the toad). You should put that on your list of things to do.
On our way out of the KOA, after crossing a bridge over Raven Fork, turning right onto Sherrill Cove Road, I turned a "little" short and dragged the right front wheel of the toad over a curb that was about 12" high. OOPS!!! It was ALL MY FAULT!!! Nothing wrong with the road. With an appropriate degree of care, it's completely "doable". Almost ripped the right front wheel off the Subaru. We were stopped dead in our tracks. Thanks to our friends at Coach Net, a tow truck was on scene soon to haul the Subaru to a local repair place. $2,300 and a few days later, we were on our way. It wasn't a complete loss. We found a rental car and enjoyed the Bourbon Trail, just a little north in Kentucky, while we waited for the repairs to be completed.
Nothing wrong with the roads in/out of the KOA. They ARE a little bit of a challenge. Now, with more than 60,000 miles towing the Subaru, and an appropriate degree of care, I'd drive that again.
So, that KOA will always have a special place in my memories.
Be careful out there.
Take care,
Stu
