Colorado hwy advice - I-70 to Rocky Mtn. NP

Wondering if a route north from I-70 (Exit 243) to Rocky Mountain National Park (US Highway 34) via CO Highways 119, 72 and 7, through the little towns of Central City, Rollinsville, Nederland, Ward and Allenspark, is advisable in a small motor home with a toad . . . looking for nice scenery, but not anything like crossing the Andes on a pack mule!

Will be traveling through later this week (about August 19 or 20)

Appreciate your advice - thanks.

I live in Colorado. The peak to peak highway is very a scenic way to go. I think you would be fine is you stay on the highway and don't go into the side streets in Central City or Black Hawk. It is not too steep, fast or curvy. BTW, I just joined irv2 yesterday as I was thinking seriously about rv'ing. Sure could use some advice

We've gone that way with our 42' Allegro Bus dragging the Wrangler along behind - total weight around 46,000 lbs. It's hilly but very scenic and quite dioable. For a lighter motorhome it would be easier assuming that the power to weight ratio is adequate.

Actually your worst traffic will be in Estes Park itself.

The last time I made the mistake to enter Central City, it was a mess with the Casinos and traffic. With a motorhome it would be a nightmare. You can stay on the highway and motor on through.

I think you'll do fine if your brakes are good.

We are planning to make this trip in early June.

Anybody have any experience with camping within Rocky Mountain NP? I found 1 campground with room for a 40 ft coach (Morain) and was curious if anyone had made the trek with their coach.

We stayed at Elk Meadow, which is right on the border of the park. Lots of room and easy access to the park.
