Colorado travel

Around 10/09 I will be traveling in our class A from Durango to Montrose on 550 then on to Salida on 50 after coming from Florida to visit the Grand Canyon. I'm fairly new to rv'ing. Any comments on driving this route in Colorado during this time of the year would be appreciated.

Google "Million Dollar Highway" and watch a few of the videos. RV of all types and big truck drive it all the time. It is a beautiful drive. Some sharp turns, stretches without guard rails a up/down grades. Take your time and enjoy the drive!
Here is one.

Beautiful country and a great drive. However, if you are squirrely on mountain roads 550 from Silverton to Ouray, CO (The Million Dollar Highway) may not be for you. It is safe, but, in places, narrow and winding, and in some locations narrow without guard rails. From Silverton to Ouray you will be on the inside lane. As rgvtexan said, big rigs; i.e., RVs and semis travel it regularly. U.S. 50 is a very pretty drive, through the Gunnison Valley and over Monarch Pass. Gear down and climb the west side slowly, and gear down and descend the east side into Poncha Springs.

We recently came into Durango from the east on Hwy. 160. In our gasser, it was slow going towing the Jeep. We are now in Montrose via 550 - we drove up disconnected to give Squeaky a break. The grades are doable and 550 is in very good shape. The twist and turns get a little tight between Silverton and into Ouray as does the grade angles...still should be no problem. It's just another 'scenic route'.

Hwy 50 from Gunnison to Montrose is fairly tame. Don't miss Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP with your toad(grades are steeper going into the park from 50...road is good as well. Only concern I've heard from other RV'rs is Monarch Pass east of Gunnison is a little steep for some of their co-pilots tastes.

Weather wise...I have no clue. Three days ago, we were Jeep'n on the top half of the Alpine Loop...3pm, we got snowed on, hit with hail and had temps in the low 30's. Lake City is where the DW cried Uncle, so we took 149 north and west on 50. Today we got hit with a very cold wind shear here at the CG. Lasted less than 5 minutes. So, weather is a toss up...year round, so say the natives.

Centennial RV is about the nicest park in the Montrose area...plenty of elbow room and it's well run. Now, if they could just do something about the wind... Headed for Priest Gulch on Friday.

We have pulled a 10K 32' fifth wheel on the "Million Dollar Hwy" both ways, several times in spring and fall. Aspens should be starting to turn in October for a nice show. Time and weather permitting, you should spend some time exploring the San Juan Skyway area, some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. We have stayed in RV parks near Canon City, Durango and Ouray and explored the surrounding areas, it's one of our favorite places to visit. A couple of fairly steep passes but nothing too severe, just take your time and enjoy!!! Ride the train and visit Mesa Verde for sure!!
