Current highway surface conditions on a map.

Anyone else wish they could see current highway conditions overlaid on a digital map? Something that indicated which highways are smooth sailing, and which are pothole ridden, expansion jointed, gravel strewn hells; such as 285 south out of Carlsbad, NM.

When planning a route I like consider the weather, cities, traffic, tolls, and construction reports ...but knowing in advance that one route is littered with crappy roads, while another was mostly smooth would be awesome.

Seems like a great fit for crowd-sourced reporting such as Waze. Heck, on some roads you could even use the accelerometer in today's phones to automatically measure/report on jarring bumps along the way. Aggregate that data and display it on a map (even just for major interstates), and we'd have another useful datapoint when it's time to cover some ground.

Not a map but the closest thing I could find when I looked 6 months ago.

Canada and United States Travel - Highway and Road Conditions, Weather, Airports, Ferries, Traffic and Transit

Listed by state with some states doing a good job while others are pretty much worthless.

If you do find something, please let us know!!

The information is available...if the states elect to publish it.

Can you imagine the hue and cry from the merchants along a road labeled as rougher than a corn cob if traffic naturally diverted to other roads away from the merchants? Gosh, the states might even pay attention and attempt to raise taxes to pay for the repairs.

The best thing I have found is to ask on message boards like this one with your proposed routes, and with luck someone will warn you of roads like Hwy 285 from Carlsbad NM, to Pecos TX.
