Dallas to Orlando - avoid Houston?

we are planning a trip from Wichita Falls TX to Melbourne FL (I just put Dallas to Orlando because I didn't want to explain where smaller towns were).

Anyway - we are picking up daughter in College Station along the way which means we have to decide if we want to go through Houston or not.

We will be towing our first travel trailer (27') with a truck we just bought. So, we will be very new to towing. We have driven a 34' motorhome so we are not totally new to "big rigs"

Anyway - how do most of you handle this - would you take smaller highways if it added 50 miles to your trip to avoid getting in bumper to bumper big city traffic? OR do you try and pass through the city when traffic is low so you can enjoy the bigger roadways and less potholes?

If not in a hurry, I would take Hwy 6 south to Navasota then, 105 east to Beaumont. Get on I-10 in Beaumont

X2- Came thru Hou Sun morn expecting light traffic. Was I ever wrong. I35 was a parking lot.

Coming from College Station is ideal, you can loop around on the tollway at Jersey Village or continue down to the 610 loop or even continue on down to I-10 and take it. I lived in the Houston for about 12 years total and while I hated the Houston summer weather I never found the traffic to be too bad.


BTW I-35 goes through Austin and it nearly always sucks!

I would avoid 290 if at all possible. There is construction from Cypress all the way to 610 and the 610 interchange is also under construction. Lanes are narrow and some places down to 2 lanes.

Pick up TX 105 in Navasota to I-10 in Beaumont. Don't go anywhere near Houston.

I35 doesn't go through Houston, but they ones that do are often parking lots. I avoid going through Dallas at all costs!

Last time I went through Dallas I stopped at a rest area 50 miles north at about 7pm, went to bed and then awoke and drove through Dallas at about 2:30am. When I got through Dallas I pulled into another rest area south of the city and went back to sleep .

I did the same thing for LA, after all I'm retired and have the time.

Stay away from both Dallas and Houston! Both are miserable unless you need to log some combat driving! Head across to Texarkana and Shreveport, then down 49 to I-10. Don't be in a rush to get on the Interstates, though, I prefer the state highway systems. More scenic, more history, less traffic. We drive a 43 ft motorhome with a toad, and are very comfortable on state highways. My experience has been that they are in better shape than the interstates, likely because they are not beaten up by the heavy haulers. Enjoy the ride!
