Wondering about using US-441 thru GA and NC. Or cut west over to US-411 somewhere before hand. We have two weeks to make the trip, but we will be arriving on a Sunday, so I'm thinking I want to avoid going thru GSMNP. Working with the map is cumbersome as I'm going from page to another.

But I'm thinking of either bailing on I-20 over to I-75 and then US-411 or:

Go up to Athens and then take US-129 or is there better route to cut west somewhere?

Mostly interested in good roads vs speed, we don't mind driving thru small towns but like to avoid heavy traffic areas. Thanks,

DO NOT take US129 from Tenn to NC. That is the infamous Tale of the Dragon. Motorcycles only. Narrow two lane, 200+ tight turns in 11 miles.

We usually just bite the bullet and go through Atlanta and Chattanooga.

We have took 441 up to Dillsboro and then up to I40 above Maggie Valley and come into Gatlinburg from the north, kind of long way though but scenic.

Hi all ! Newbie to posting but have been a lurker for ages. I live in the Knoxville area and have made the trip up 441 from I 10 MANY times. Its beautiful 4 lane country road all the way. The towns are nice and easy to pass through for an RV. You will love it. Pay VERY close attention bypassing Athens, being a college town the traffic can be a bit heavy but not bad at all. When you come into NC, turn east at Dillsboro onto 23/74, this will take you towards Waynesville, Lake Junaluska area in NC. If I may make a couple camp recommendations. When you get to Waynesville, stay at Trails End Campground. Its 2 miles off I 40 and dead quiet, small, beautifully landscaped and in farm country. Its one of my favorites. When you leave there, i 40 coming down "the gorge" from Waynesville towards Knoxville is a breath takingly beautiful ride through the eastern end of the GSMNP and very easy to do in a motorhome. In the Pigeon Forge/ Sevierville area, try and stay at Up The Creek Campground. Again, it's small, beautifully landscaped and in the country. Check out their website but be aware its more beautiful than the pictures. Its one of my favorite local escapes. And please feel free to email me for more local info, I'll be glad to assist. Hi Bob and Inga,
I make the West Palm Beach to Sevierville and back trip a couple of times a year. The shortest mileage and easiest drive is North on I 95 to I 26. West on I 26 to I 40. West on I 40 to exit 407. Route 66 south 13 miles and you are in Sevierville. There is a Pilot station at exit 417, if you want a full tank of fuel while in Sevierville.
