Denali Highway- RT 8, Alaska

Picking up a class c in Anchorage and heading to Denali. I was looking at taking the Denali Highway ( Rt. 8) from Cantwell to Paxson. How is that road for an experienced class A driver in a 26 foot class C?
Thanks, Tim

It's gravel and it's rough in spots. I'm sure the conditions change from year to year but I would guess it's passable in a Class C.

130 miles of gravel/chip seal, rough. You should be ok.

If it's a rental Class C check your paperwork, almost every rental agency in AK prohibits specific roads. The Denali Hwy is one of those specifically listed.

The Denali Hwy has a couple lodges and one tire shop, not sure the tire shop is still open. There are no other businesses on the Denali Hwy. Take a spare tire if you go.

Drive slow.

Fun drive, made it several times when I still lived in AK

I'd characterize it as 'rough' and definitely not suitable for a rental. Rentals have restrictions and if you have any damage you are definitely liable. Read your contract thoroughly.

Thanks, Gravel Road Changes Plan

Realized after posting that it is gravel road.
Wife would prefer I bypass smaller roads on this trip since we are time compressed.

There is or at least used to be about 25 miles of paved road on each end of the Denali Hwy. Some beautiful scenery in those stretches. Check the milepost for suitable spots to turn around and as others a have said check your rental restrictions.
