Denver to Oklahoma City

Can anyone tell me how US287 is from Denver to Amarillo? We were going to run I-70 through Kansas but I am thinking we will try to avoid the wind and drop South through Colorado on 287.

We have a 2500 Chevy with the 6.0 Vortec and a 25' TT.

The wind is mostly in an easterly direction( coming from Colorado). We've never had issues coming back to Kansas from the west, but going to the west from Kansas we've hit head winds the whole way.
