Devil's Tower, WY

Leaving Rushmore KOA tomorrow for Buffalo KOA. Wondering if a drive-by of Devil's Tower would be feasible/worth it? 40' Class A towing.

It looks fairly easy on Google earth. Guessing 85/585 via Sundance then 14/24.

Suggestions on turn around location?

Thanks in advance.

On Edit: RV Trip Wizard suggests 385 via Deadwood the 90 to Sundance. That seems the best?

For some reason it doesn't suggest 90 or 14 to continue on to Buffalo?

Not familiar with RV Trip Wizard. Google maps suggests 385 to 16 to 85 to 585 to 14 to 24 arrive at DT. Then backtrack 24 to 14 to I-90 and westward to Buffalo KOA.
Was there back in 2014 (I think it was?) and not much there except a general store in front of a big rock.

It was a nice relaxing back roads drive, but watch out for the pronghorns and other wildlife on the roadways.

Hope ya did "Wall Drug" on your journey. Now THAT'S worth seeing.

If I recall, there is a KOA campground at the entrance. I was there pulling a trailer and did not want to go in, so was able to turnaround and did not go in. If you want to see it I would check on the camping and go from there. It did not look to have a lot of room.

I-90 to Sundance
Then Hwy 14 to Hwy 24 to the Devils Tower entrance road
There is a KOA on right side and a strip mall (Outfitters/Trading Posy) on left side before entrance gate
*Park RV then drive up to Visitors Center

Leaving...Devils Tower Road to Hwy 24
Hwy 24 to Hwy 14
Hwy 14 to I-90 then on to Buffalo

OR Pull over at Devils Tower Roadside Marker (pull off area) on Hwy 24

Take pictures of Tower off in distance then flip back around and take Hwy 23 back to 14....Hwy 14 (westward) back to I-90 at Moorcroft then I-90 to Buffalo

Personally....if not going to spend at minimum several hours AT the Monument just do the Roadside Maker/Pictures and go on with your travels

I volunteered in Custer State Park for 3 summers. I would go up to Rapid City and get on I-90 there. 385 to Deadwood is a longer route on mostly a 2 lane highway and getting thru Deadwood in a motorhome with a toad is challenging.

You can drive right into Devils Tower and if its not full there is parking on the way out after you have made the circle.

There is not much room at the top for turning around. When I was there pulling a 28'fifth wheel i was able to negotiate the turnaround at the top. Great place and it has a nice trail at the base which is probably 3 miles around. If you just want a place to park while you spend a few hours at the top, you could just get a spot at the bottom at the bel fourch river state park for about $6 a night or just use it as a parking spot.It has great views of the monument.

I started out with nothing and I still have most of it left

At the top it goes in a circle, you don't have to turn around.

We had to dump the trailer at the bottom and pick it up on the way back out. This was in......2016, I suppose.

OP Here. Thought I'd report back for future travelers. Thanks for your inputs - very helpful.

We had been to Deadwood and Sturgis Sunday so we knew that way. I needed diesel. Custer has a Sinclair station with outlying pumps and building go around so we opted to go that way, plus we had already seen the other routes. Plus we don't like Interstates.

Routing was US16, 85, 585 (at 4 corners), 14, and 24 to the rock. There was a long line at the entrance so we opted to just see it from the Trading Post lot. We then did 24, 14, 90 to Buffalo.

ALL of the roads were excellent, many recently paved. Elevation changes (not many) were easy with a 40' towing. Light traffic. Beautiful scenery. We're glad we did the drive-by.

Again, thanks for the inputs.
