Driving home from Central Illinois...storms ahead of us?

We are leaving Central Illinois today and heading home to Southern CA. We are planning on taking the highway from Decatur to St. Louis, and camping somewhere just west of St. Louis tonight, then onto the 44 tomorrow, heading towards Oklahoma City. Of course we are closely watching all those storms and flooding in that area of OK and TX. Looks like it will have gone NE of us by Mon/Tues. is this a smart decision, or should we really try and avoid the OK area, and head home on the 70 towards Kansas City?

I prefer I-70 because it's a better road than those through Oklahoma. Watch your fuel gauge, I got caught in Illinois in a thunderstorm that knocked out all power when I was low on gas. I had to use a gas can and drain gas from a tanker truck to transfer enough to get me out of the power outage area. I-70 leads to Denver and the beautiful Rockies and Utah, much nicer view out the windshield than Oklahoma, Texas, etc.

I have driven 70 & I-44 to 20 & prefer the latter. 70 is very mountainous, it is very scenic but the scenery gets old after the first day. Going across Kansas is no different than
Oklahoma.
If you do take I-44 south stay at the Hard Rock casino in Tulsa, easy in & out & nice place.
Watch the weather & plan accordingly

We are taking the 70 to about halfway across Kansas then cutting down to Dodge City and Dalhart TX, then hitting the 40 down there. Love crossing the mountains near Denver but had just done that last summer. No problems at all. Weather looks good today..just decided to avoid parts of Oklahoma.

Caroland,
I'll be going from Napponee to Denver in a couple of weeks, trying to decide if I-70 is in better condition than I-80.
How was 70 ?
