We're planning a trip to North Carolina and will eventually drive from Asheville, NC to Gettysburg, PA using I-81. I see that we will pass close to the Shenandoah National Park and was wondering how good the main road through the park is? Since it is a national park I assume there is some kind of speed limit (45?). We will be traveling in a 2003 Southwind 35' pulling a toad. Looks like we will be in the area just after Labor Day.

Would like some comments on quality of the road, traffic, etc. Seems like the drive would be nice, but not sure if it would be worth the extra time off I-81. From some other posts it sounds like I-81 might have some of the views, but without the luxury of a slower drive when you can better appreciate what you're seeing.

Any comments are appreciated. Thanks.

The drive along Skyline Drive from its southern exit near Waynesboro to it's northern terminus at Front Royal, VA would be well worth your investment in time. It's a beautiful piece of the country. Seeing the Blue Ridge from I-81 wouldn't come near doing it justice, there's just no comparison.

We've made the trip several times towing a 5th wheel and have observed numerous motorhomes enjoying the drive. If you decide to take the time to see it, I highly recommend staying a few days at Big Meadow Campground and taking in some of the free tours the rangers offer and watching the herds of deer wander through the campground around dusk or early morning.
