Purely from a logistics point of view, it occurs to me that ~2 hours a day might leave you in a few areas that might not be your first choice of places to spend the night.

Itasca State Park has some great campgrounds at the start of the river. You walk across the river on stepping stones, great fun.

We will start our trip south from Bemidji and Lake Itasca on September 20 with Adventure Caravans. I am not wanting to start a controversy over caravan trips here.
Thanks to all for the tips and links.

I would like to know more about that. According to Google Maps, there are no roads anywhere near the start of the river, which is at the south end of Nicolet Lake. Looks like you would need a lot of hiking or boating to get there. You may be thinking the start of the river to be somewhere else.

The headwaters of the Mississippi River is considered Lake Itasca, which is fed by Nicolet Creek, which starts at a springs, and a small stream from Elk Lake, which itself is fed by two small streams. In any given year it is indeterminant whether more water flow comes from Elk Lake or Nicolet Creek. Nicolet Lake is not the headwaters of the Mississippi River. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Itasca# The place where one can ford the river is pictured on the Lake Itasca wiki.

My thanks also for starting this thread, and to those who provided links to more information about it. It sounds like a wonderful and informative adventure.
After traveling about for many years there comes a time when much has already been seen and one is looking for something they have not seen. For me/us, this will become one of those trips to plan for in the near future. We have seen bits and pieces from LA to WI/MN, but never the whole thing.
Thanks again, and enjoy the trip!
Steve
Thanks again.

Last year (2015) another couple joined us at Bemidji and went the entire distance, as far as two 42' motorhomes could go.
It took us about 80 days meandering and sightseeing. Wiped out a whole lot of our "Bucket List". And it wasn't all that expensive.
