Driving though Atlanta.

Headed to Florida for the first time. Will be going through Atlanta, wondering if there are any tips or things we need to know. Thanks in advance for your help.

Over the years we have driven thru Atlanta, both ways, on I-75 many times. Most of the time you can count on one, maybe 10 minute, slowdown somewhere. But we have pulled every sort of towable thru there. Any attempt at a bypass will cost you much more time and whatever you do STAY OFF the ring road.

Sure driving thru at 4AM on Sunday will be faster but just grit your teeth and get it done. You used to be able to take the high capacity lane but they've closed that from what I saw in August.

I agree, been through Atlanta many many times. Best route is directly down I-75 right downtown. Yes, lots of traffic, but should flow ok. Going around just gets into the traffic on the outer belts. Same O, same O. Slow.

Point of interest. Traveling on south to Florida, I-75 gets really stuffed up during the Holiday seasons. Consider traveling during the evening or night.
Take care, drive safe.

Drive back and forth to FL from NC 3 times each year pulling a 5th or a boat. The Atlanta 75 route has the best roads by far. Timing is everything. 10 a.m. till 11:30 a.m during the week always seems to be the best traffic flow for us. Any time on Sunday, which is what we try to do.

We're leaving MN in ten days so we won't hit any holiday traffic. Going down early to meet up with some friends.

Be in the correct lane well before you need to. It is nearly impossible to change lanes while everyone is zooming at 80mph around you.

Hatchee, we have also always tried to go through any big city between 10 and 11 am. And like you we will sometimes drag our feet to hit a Sunday when possible. Sounds like traveling through Atlanta is better than many large cities. Thanks everyone.

Bill, that is indeed always the biggest problem. I always have my DW on lane alert.

I have started planning our trips through Atlanta so we travel on a Sunday. It is by far the best day to travel through the city. But, we don't have any time constraints, so it works for us. Otherwise, use a good GPS that lets you know what lane(s) to be in so you can stay on track.

avoid it altogether.

- i-65 south to i-85 east at montgomery
- exit 9 on i-85 (US271 & TO US231). right at the top of the ramp
- 5-7 miles later turn LEFT on US231
- follow 231 (4-lane) thru troy, ozark and dothan into florida to i-10
- i-10 east to i-75.

all things equal it's maybe 45-min longer but lots and lots less stressful.

RV's are prohibited from using the Express Lanes (I checked the DOT website). Also, last time we went thru there on I-75 about 7:00 PM, traffic was a little heavy and the Express Lanes were closed. It seemed like they are only open during the AM and PM rush hours.

Please explain this? "whatever you do STAY OFF the ring road."
