Driving Through WV Mountains for First Time

Hi.. I'm a rookie and need to head south from Ohio to Charleston. I've read that taking 79 to 19 from Charleston might be easier than the turnpike. I'm very nervous about the whole trip but need to get moving. Any advice? I will be getting on 77 from Ravenswood off of 33. I have a Melbourne 29 and towing a Honda CRV. Thanks for any help!

if you are talking about Charleston WV. Be advised it is north of the WV turnpike. So the hills on I 77 north of the turnpike are not bad at all.

I will be heading from Charleston WV to Charleston SC. Should I take 79W to 19S rather than the turnpike?

RT 19 from Sutton to Beckley is very nice. 4 lanes with some stops lights in town areas. Plenty of gas stations and places to eat. There are some hills but they are bad at all. Interstate 79 is also good.

You will probably have delays going into Charlotte on I 77 as they are adding more lanes. Traffic generally comes to a standstill at Lake Norman. If you don't mind adding some miles, consider taking I-485 Outer around Charlotte. I 77 goes through Charlotte and there is considerable road construction. If you decide to take I 485, use the Outer loop towards Pineville. I 485 will connect to I 77 south of Charlotte.

Not much different in my opinion but since Charleston WVA is on I 77, I would probably just stay on it the whole way.

X2 on using the I-485 bypass!! Earlier this year coming north we missed the ramp to I-485 and had a white knuckle ride until we got north of Lake Norman. Watch closely for the signs.

Yes I've missed it in my car as well! Signs aren't to good and not on nav systems for some reason! Thanks!
