We've done it both ways a few times with our 40' motorhome. No issues. Gorgeous drive! However, we love mountain driving.

We did it a couple of years ago pulling our 32' fifth wheel with an ATV trailer behind. Drove the whole thing, Durango to Silverton, then on up to Montrose. Beautiful drive, not a problem, just realize that you will have some tight turns, and there are places without guardrail, but nothing so tight that you can't stay in your own lane the whole time. Just take your time and enjoy!

Last time for us on that route was last August with my Bighorn. We were pulling from Ouray to Durango, which normally the wife doesn’t like because that’s the direction where you are on the outer edge. This time around road construction had single lane travel so no issues. No issues staying in lane, if you have a diesel with an engine brake you’ll appreciate it on the slow downhill. Hardest part is keeping eyes on road with all the spectacular scenery.

Thank you I am driving a 2014 F250 6.7 diesel with only tow haul function! May I ask what vehicle you used to tow your trailer

Did the trip beginning of June. Driving a F250, diesel pulling 31' TT. The road was great and very scenic. Problem we had was the bicycle race being held from Silverton to Ouray. We probably had to deal with 50+ bicycles.

I really don't get why folks would rather tow or drive their RV over this section of road other than just plain wanting to get from point A to point B directly.

There are hardly any pullouts at the scenic areas, let alone other sections of road.

It is so curvy and narrow with steep drop offs that it's practically impossible for the driver to enjoy the views because all of his/her focus will have to be on the road. And depending on your passenger's taste for hight, curves, blind corners, it might not even be enjoyable for that person.

RVs slow others down making things tense for everyone.

There are alternative routes.

And it is easily doable in an auto/truck in one day allowing for time to enjoy the drive.

So why not find an alternate route and then go back and enjoy that beautiful drive?

btw... south to north would be my preferred direction in an RV

Better late than never. Don’t drive from silverton to ouray in a big rv if you want to enjoy the scenery . Way too my hard turns
I drove my tow from Durango and enjoyed the lunch and finding a parking space in Ouray
