East Coast to Kansas
I'm working out my travel route from Rhode Island to Smith Center, KS and I can't decide what would be a better route since I've never actually done this trek before. I'm looking at heading south on I-95 towards NYC then jumping on 287 to bypass NYC to I-78 to I-70 to Indianapolis then I-74 to I-72 to Hwy 36 all the way across Missouri and Kansas. I have never been on I-70 east of the Mississippi River and it looks like it is very curvy, which to me means a lot of mountains and slow traveling. Furthermore, Google maps has me on Hwy 36 for a long stretch. I've done Hwy 36 from Denver to Smith Center and it was a great road. Not sure how it is coming the other way. So far the weather looks like it will be decent for the trip. Any one know of a better route?!
The other option I'm considering is again south towards NYC then 287 to bypass NYC then I-80 the rest of the way. On the downside I will be further north and will have to go near Cleveland and Chicago. I have never been this route and have no idea conditions of roads and access the truck stops.
