Eldorado Mountains California 50

Hey All,
Going to take our first baby step in the RV. Interested in taking the mountains from Sacramento CA to Reno or Carson City with the end result of Grand Canyon. This is our first trip and dont want a disaster. We are pulling a 28 foot Crossroads all american with a 97 Dodge 12 valver with auto trans (recently rebuilt with larger TC). Seems like some tall mountains and have never been through there. Guess the questions are 50 or 80 for RV travel and sight seeing, what are the roads like on each and do you think I am overloaded pulling 12k with my 12 valver? Pulled a boat that had 9k on axles still attached to my truck and seemed OK but definitely knew it was there. Any wild guess what the boat weight could have been? Yep its gonna be an adventure. Got 30 days to get from Oregon to the Grand Canyon via 50 or 80 and up through Ogden Utah and back home to Eugene Oregon area.
With all that said anyone been on these highways for this route and can give us any hints for travel, sights, RV lodging etc would greatly be appreciated.

Hi Bob and Krista,

80 is the easiest on your truck but you need some weight info on your RV. Find out from Dodge what specs your truck is capable of towing and what maintenance is required while on the road.

Be safe,
