Elkhart to Dubuque "around" Chicago

Looking at tangled mess of roads I decided to ask. Any advise on RV suitable route around Chicago?

Its out of the way but I always go over to 39 and up. I NEVER go thru chicago. The hour extra is saved in toll roads and toll costs and traffic

I could not find an acceptable work around when I picked my motorhome up NW of Chicago. I had to stop at about 6 toll booths. Some Illinois toll booths do not have attendents or take money. Make sure you record the day/time/toll booth number so you can go online and pay your tolls within a week. Oh, and the roads are about as poor of condition as you can imagine. I would drive several hours out of the way to avoid it again.

Any advise on RV suitable route around Chicago?

This route will avoid "Chicago"
  • west on I-80
  • south on Indiana 49
  • West on US 30 to near Joliet
  • West on I-80
  • North on I-39
  • West on US-20

There will be lots of stop lights on US 30 ... so you have your choice I-80 all the way to I-39 with lots of traffic (and toll booths) ... or lots of stop lights on US-30

Personally, I think I would buy an I-pass before the trip and stay on I-80

YES . This route is worth every extra mile. When going to Milwaukee from Kentucky, we sometimes even return through the Michigan upper peninsula - just to avoid Chicago
