Favorites .... Which HWY Took Your Breath Away?

Lets see where this can go? What are the Highways in the USA (ok, step-sister CA is fair game) that have just stunned you for their beauty. I would expect that the beauty you saw was at least partially not expected. I think we can exchange some nuggets here more than routes between cities.

Here are mine:
1. CA 89 North of Coleville, CA off the US 395 to Lake Tahoe and then on to Mt. Lassen National Park. In the first hour and a half, you will see why the Sierra Nevada is beyond compare.
2. US 395 Victorville, CA to Valley Falls, OR. You see it all. Start in the Mohave Desert, get to Bishop, Mammoth, Bridgeport (in each take a 20 minute drive west and see some really special places) see the volcanic rock, mountains, forests... you see a complete transition of geography in one Highway.
3. US 180 Deming, NM to Holbrook, AZ. Again, desert to canyons to mountains to forest to high plains desert. Amazing transition.
4. US 70 Lordsburg, NM to Globe, AZ and then the US 60 to Phoenix. You never knew the desert was so beautiful!
5. US 49 Jackson, MS to Hattiesburg, MS, US 98 to Mobile, AL. Very nice drive.
6. OR & NV 140 to US 95 to Winnemucca, NV It will surprise you!
7. NM 518 to NM 104 which is Taos, NM to Tucumcari, NM. New Mexico surprises me each time I go there, but this drive will take your breath away. Large rigs may have some difficulty on the 104, its more of a county road.

So.. that is enough to get started... please... tell us your best and why....

Just came through there couple weeks ago and I agree, that was a beautiful drive along the Columbia River.

Think we need PICTURES with these!

........

At this point, Likely to late - But all the roads mentioned have taken My Breath away.

Couple more to ADD;

RT 128 in Utah along the Colorado River, feel like the mini Grand Canyon to me.

RT 82 - Independence Pass - Twin Lakes to Aspen, right now with the Aspen turning Gold.

Peak to Peak anytime

RT 6 from Golden to Idaho Springs - anytime but Special just after a snow on a Sunny Day.

RT 119 Out of Boulder to Nederland, another Winter time Favorite.

Rt 36 and 34 from the foothills to Estes Park.

RT 12 Hog Back in Utah.

RT 64 Asheville to Cashiers in the Carolinas

RT 101 along the Coast in Washington State

Couple I's to mess you up - I-70 in Glenwood Springs along the Colorado River - I-15 going from Nevada to Utah - along the Virgin River in Arizona.

That's TEN (10)+

I could go on and on but will leave a few for others,

"Make the Drive as Good as the Destination"

JMHO,

24 West out of Colorado Springs, then connect to 9 North toward Breckenridge.

Takes you through South Park, and the highest town in the US as you cross over the Continental Divide and watch the rivers and ditches immediately change direction.
