FL to Ithaca NY may 2020

Well this spring instead of heading to Maine having to take a detour through Ithaca NY arriving there before Memorial Day. Our normal route is
i95 to Fredricksburg VA
hwy 17 across VA to I81
north on I81 to Scranton PA kick over east on I84...

So I've heard I81 NORTH of Scranton is pretty bad, so looking for a better route into Ithaca.
My thoughts are I81 up to around Carlisle PA maybe west on I80 and take a US Hwy north from there into Ithaca.

OR a different plan. Open to any suggestions

Any experience and road knowledge greatly appreciated

I-81 in PA is one of our least favorite roads, but the alternatives going to Ithaca are not that great. The truckers route from western NY is US 15, but there’s towns and curves. Coming East subjects you to NJ and NY 17 (the Quickway as it’s referred to locally....now a kind of joke).
I’d bite the bullet and run I-81 personally. - Ron

RT81 to Carlisle, pick up rt 15 all the way to Corning NY. Then you can cross over a few ways to Ithaca, you would have to no matter how you get to NY. RT 15 is actually pretty nice now days. I would definitely not go out of your way by staying on 81.

I second that, live in Ithaca and make that trip multiple times per year.

I81 was not that bad a drive? I drove from Big Pine Key to Niagara Falls Canada just a week ago. We drove I95 to I495 (Washington) to I70 to I81 direct to Syracuse NY. I think some of the drivers were crazier than the road. Lol. We took that route to avoid the weather on the North side of the mountains.

X3 on Western 15 RT. Grew up outside Ithaca and return from South each summer. Parts of US15 are now actually designated as an Interstate (99 I think),new smooth and empty.

Thanks to all

I had thought 15 from Carlisle is north before. From your comments we'll that that route. We have driven I81st from Carlisle to Scranton numerous times.

A change in scenery will be nice!

Thank you all for the info
