Flattest Route
In another thread I learned about flattestroute.com
A very nice site where you can set a start and end point. It will then calculate the flattest route and put it on a google map. Below the map you get both an elevation profile of the route along with gradients along that route. Moving a mouse over either of the two maps will show where that point is on the route map.
You can drag parts of the route to something you might prefer instead. This might be necessary in some cases. As an example, it doesn't know I'm a 43' coach and not supposed to be on some routes.
You should still do your homework since it doesn't know anything about length, weight or low bridges. However, it is still a nice tool.
BTW, it can be used for walking and biking routes.

Flattest Route
Thanks for this, I've been wondering for some time why somebody hadn't already done this - you'd think the GPS makers with RV specific units would be all over this.

Google Earth does this natively. It doesn't have the factors for height or length, either.

I'm heading to Road Atlanta in Braselton, Ga from Cleveland, Oh next month towing a trailer full of bikes and whole lota other stuff with a V10 gasser and gave this site a try. It recommends taking I-77 which I know has more "Hills" then I-75. I then dragged the route to I-75 and to me it looks like the better level route.

Flattest Route
Flat can be nifty. But going up/down grades is usually more scenic.
I'll take scenic over 1mpg!
There is way to avoid Wolf Creek Pass. But the good stuff is on the Pass!

Not everyone is looking for challenging routes. Even if they are, forewarned is forearmed especially in areas you are not familiar with. It is nice to know that Creek Pass is at nearly 11,000' with extended time in climbs and descents exceeding 5%. Being able to "pre-flight" the route and deciding if you want to do it is always better than kicking the tires and lighting the fires without a flight plan. While a trucker's map for mountains might provide some good information, there is something nice about how this site's information is provided to the user.

I think that is the value of this site. You get a chance to evaluate the data and decide what is best for you or at least be prepared for it. Personally, I don't see a problem with either route but I'm in a DP with 400 HP and have tackled 1-70 from Grand Junction to Denver. I'm prepared to go as slow as 35 MPH. LOL

Yep. Easier to take in the view at 35.
I find that some of the toughest up/down grades in beautiful passes have a fuel price that is worth it.

Maybe I'm not reading this right, but if I look at a route through the Eisenhower Tunnel on I-70 in Colorado, it shows a 6% grade going uphill (heading East) and an 8% grade going downhill when heading West.
How can that be?

Not sure what your looking at but it's a harder pull going east than going west.
