Florida Keys to Chiefland

The last leg of our trip will be from the Keys to Chiefland, Fl. We were going to take I 75 but it sounds like that is a nightmare so are looking for other alternatives - we have lots of time. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Coming out of the keys I would take 91. (The Florida turnpike) up through Orlando to 75 to 27 into Chiefland. Far less traffic than the gulf coast.

WEll US 19/98 is the usual way but traffic on it can be bad until you get north of Crystal River. Especially the stretch north of Tarpon Springs. I'd think about getting on I4 west off I75 to 589 north follow that to the end then there is a short local road west to us 19/98. Then north to Otter Creek, a wide spot in the road, and west on SR 24 to Cedar Key.

I have to say I have only been on 589 once, years ago, so I don't really know what it's like now.

The 30 miles between the turnpike and us 27 on the interstate through Ocala has heavy traffic but is 3 lan so if no accidents traffic moves well. US 27 has very light traffic.

I know this isn't exactly realistic, but if you do have plenty of time and are particularly adventurous, you could take US 1 all the way north. Yes, there would be lots of traffic to contend with, but there are a lot of sights to see on that route: Miami Beach, Ft Lauderdale, and Kennedy Space Center for example.

I think Agesilaus meant 54 west off I75, not I4, to 589. We used 589 this spring. It's a toll road now and cost about $15 between 98 and 54. It is a nice fast route and was worth the cost to us to avoid congestion on 19 as we were headed to Palm Harbor. I don't believe the Sun Pass works on this. If I remember correctly there were 3 toll booths, $5 at each for our class C & toad.

If you do the second one, do stop in at the feed store/gas station in Keenansville for a pretty good and very frugal pulled pork sandwich from their deli. They smoke it on site. Plenty of room to park.

US-27 north out of the Miami area all the way to Clermont. SR-50 from Clermont to Ridge Manor. US-301 Ridge Manor to Bushnell. CR-48 Bushnell to Floral City. US-41 Floral City to Williston. US-27Alt Williston to Chiefland.

Do not just go up US-27 or you'll discover the true meaning of traffic from Leesburg through the Villages to past Ocala.

There are plenty of commercial CGs and four state parks along the way.

I plan to check some of the replies. We will be staying at Manatee Springs SP in April but we are going to be stopping in Bonita Springs and Sarasota first so it will be I-75 for us. When we were last in Sarasota we took i-75 up to I-10 and west to Tallahassee without too much difficulty.

I'd like to correct my post of 12/31 regarding Hy589/Suncoast Parkway. It is now covered by the Sunpass. It wasn't the last time we'd been on it.

My experience has been, if you're content to keep your speed down to match the big trucks and just cruise the right-hand lane, and you avoid rush hours around the bigger cities, I-75 gets you there just fine.

Where it gets dicey for a bigger vehicle is when you feel the need to move left and pass the trucks. Then everything gets frantic.

Hwy 1 to Homestead, Hwy 997 (Krome Ave) to Hwy 41 north to Naples, Collier Blvd/951 to I-75. Take the Brooksville exit, Hwy 50 west to 98/19 then north to Clermont. No tolls, the 41 and 98 parts are pleasant, 75 is what it is. I think everything except 1 and some of 997 are 4 lane.
