You pass some great farm markets in Delaware where you can get fresh fruits and veggies.
That's a good suggestion - in fact, to avoid the whole mess between Richmond and Wilmington, DE, the OP can branch off to 301 at a couple of spots both north and south of Richmond proper, and take that up through the western VA area, through Fort AP Hill, etc. It connects with US 50 between Balto and Annapolis, and 301/50 crosses at the Bay Bridge (NOT the 'Bay Bridge tunnel' or CBBT). 301 then splits off from 50, and heads north-east through the DelMarVa and up to I-95 just a bit west of Wilmington. US-50 continues east and hooks up with US-13 near Ocean City, MD. 13 then goes straight up to Wilmington as well, hitting I-95 near the Delaware Memorial Bridge.

Some travelers get mixed up between US-301 using the Annapolis BAY BRIDGE, and US-13 using the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (CBBT).

Both are excellent alternate routes avoiding the DC area.
