Fort Nelson to Watson Lake

Driving this tomorrow. Plan on stopping at Liard Hot Springs for a couple hours or R&R. Is there any cell data service in between the Hot Springs and Watson Lake?

I can't recall any cell service. Even the lodges in the middle of that "section" use satellite phones. Why would you want to sprint thru this section? We took 5 days to go from Fort Nelson to Watson Lake . One night at Summit Provincial Campground, 2 nights at Muncho Lake, 2 at Liard Hot Springs.

You will see a lot of wildlife in this next section. There should be herds of Bison as you near Liard Hot Springs.

We both work online, and aren't taking days off....so, we need cell data service. Otherwise, we'd mosey on thru. Still considering sitting here in Fort Nelson for a couple days and hitting it up on the weekend so we can take our time.

Once you hit Whitehorse, were going up to Dawson City? I know last year they were install new high speed data lines all along the road from WH to DC. That was last June. Not sure if they would be operational by now. The amount of crews along the road (Klondike route) it would suggest it was a one year project.

There is some great scenery between Fort Nelson and Watson Lake; Liard Hot Springs, Muncho Lake, buffalo herds along the side of the highway and more. I would at least wait for the weekend to enable some time for sightseeing on your way through. Also be aware that that section also has the highest fuel prices along the Alcan. Be sure to top up in Ft Nelson and hopefully your tank has the range (320 miles) to get you to Watson Lake.

As for getting the latest information on a specific area you might want to try a little-used trick I learned through many years of long distance motorcycle touring. Do a Google search for a travel oriented business in a sample town along the way, such as "gas station near Toad River BC." Select one of the locations found and Google will give you their phone number. Call and get current info direct from one of the locals.

when you ask, you don't say which provider you are questioning, though I might say it's about the same no matter.... AT&T works great through much of Canada, through their partners, but the Yukon is a different matter... Only the largest of 'cities' will have any, and certainly nothing will be available along the 'way' between, including Liard River Hot Springs, though the stop there is worth it... take the walk to the springs, along the long board walk, and enjoy several hours at the springs, in the hot section, the cool section, and you might even see a moose traversing through the area. The campground is nice, but no hookups or dump station, no cell service, no cable tv, nothing but wilderness, as with most of the campgrounds along the way. The campground will be full if you wait til the weekend. I'm not aware that reservations are offered, either. You just pay at the gate and pick any vacant site.

Well, the decision has been made. Staying here in Fort Nelson another day, headed out tomorrow after work and taking Friday off. We'll enjoy the drive/scenery/hot springs, etc. Often have to remind myself that I'm only on my own schedule, not anyone else's, and that it's ok to take a few extra days.

I would stay a night at Summit Provincial campground. Maybe Sat. night at Muncho Lake (There are two small Provincial campgrounds there) and then get to Liard Hot Springs Provincial Park campground early on Sunday (10am 11?). About half of the 56 sites are reservable, the others are first come. The earlier you get there you can get a site closest to the 700' boardwalk. No bikes on boardwalk.

Then get to Watson Lake Monday for fuel and internet.

There is good wi-fi at Toad River. The best fuel price is Contact Creek, about 20 miles before Watson Lake. Teslin also has fuel.
