I've been planning our trip to Florida from RI and was just thinking about gas prices. Within about an hour's time, I'll be in PA, MD, WV and VA travelling along I-81. Which state has the cheapest gas? Getting gas in PA would be a little early but I should be able to make it to VA if the gas there is cheaper.

What about NC and SC? Does either state have a price advantage? I'll be on I-77 at that point.

Thanks!

Thanks Whaler. I'm not sure of the zipcodes or even the names of the towns I'm going to be passing through so I was hoping people would tell me their recent experience or if they knew one state had much higher taxes then the next and so it would be best to avoid if possible.

The gas temperature map is cool though. It tells me that we are paying a lot more here in RI than we will pay anywhere else on our trip. Thanks for pointing it out.

We often use 81 starting in CNY to Fl. via 95 or 85/75 and find that Flying J’s are nicely spaced for both fuel and over-nighting with very good prices.

Flying J

As you may know they also have RV lanes for fuel, water, dump stations, designated RV parking areas and restaurants.

The advice about Flying J was good as I have always depended on them and have never had a problem with fuel or otherwise. That being said, Maryland has a high fuel tax which, coupled with the distribution region the fuel companies have placed us in, makes for a high price at the pump.

Coming down 81, the first 'best stop' for you may be Flying J in Winchester, VA. Use the flying J website (flyingj.com) to get locations and prices as you plan your route.

Safe travels,

I recently discovered this website and it's been a big help. http://www.findfuelstops.com/
You can enter your origin and destination points and it will tell you all the truck stops along the way and often what their current fuel prices are. It's database seems to be pretty extensive.

The Flying J in Winchester is a good stop, exit 323 at the W VA line. Before you get on 77S which is exit 81 go less than a mile and there is a Flying J whose prices are usually even better than Wichester when I been through there. SC prices are better than NC but they are all, at least have been, less expensive than FL.

Have a great trip!
