Getting from Missoula, MT to Kansas City
Hi everyone! We'd like to take a different route this time, and we're considering going south from Butte on I-15 to I-70, stopping at a couple of national parks in Colorado, then continuing over to Kansas City. Our concern is the mountain pass around Breckinridge on I-70 in Colorado. We're pulling a 40' fifth wheel, and we would be traveling through there the third week in September. Do you think this is a wise move, or are we likely to run into snow on the pass? Thanks if you can help? We'd also love some suggestions of things to see/do on the way home through Colorado and Kansas. Thanks!

Snow in September is definitely a possibility but it is just one of those you never know. More than likely if it were to snow it would be the wet heavy stuff and melt quickly. Which doesn't do you much good if you are in the middle of it though. I live here and personally would have no issue driving through in late September, October even November. Just keep your eye on the weather forecast. From Glenwood Springs to Denver is approx. 160 miles 3 hours of driving pretty small window for the snow to pile up too high this time of year but has been known to happen.

As you travel east on I-70 as you enter CO you will come to a *Welcome Center* ... they have RV parking and more importantly they have live TV shots of all the critical mountain passes along I-70 ... stay there until all clear

skigramp brings up an excellent point. If you go to cotrip.org on your phone or whatever device you have available you can see the cameras all along the I-70 corridor as well as any other road cameras in the state. I use it frequently to check road conditions in the winter when I travel to the southwest corner of the state over wolf creek pass. You can hear about the weather but actually being able to see the road conditions is great.

I forgot to mention that there are several convenient viewing points along east bound I-70 so you can stop and enjoy the scenery. I can remember three:
- at the crest of Vail Pass
- near the Eisenhower tunnel
- between Idaho Springs and Georgetown
I think there is also one near the exit with all the Bison near Evergreen, but my remember is not as good as it once was ...
