How is the Hwy 14 from I-90 at Ranchester, WY to Cody, WY? (35'gas class A towing) Thanks!

US 14 is one of the steepest and most crooked routes from I-90 to Yellowstone. US 16 (Buffalo exit) is better, not as steep or 'scary' as US 14. The difference in using I-90 to Ranchester or exiting at US 16 to Cody is only 5 miles, but US 16 is a much better route. I've done both a number of times, and I much prefer US 16.

We also prefer Hwy 16 from Buffalo, WY. On steep downhills, be sure to downshift before you begin the descent - not during.

Coming from 'the East' if you stop in the Black Hills and Custer, SD, another route is to follow US 16 into WY, then at US 85/18 go south to Lusk, WY. Then take US 18 to I-25 to Casper. In Casper follow US 26 to Shoshoni, then North on US 20. You'll go through the Wind River Canyon, a beautiful drive! In Thermopolis you can stop and take a soak in the city hot springs, or take in the Wyoming Dinosaur Center, a very nice museum. Also in Thermopolis you can take WY 120 that is a short cut to Cody. I've done it many times and it cuts a lot of driving off going North on US 20 through Worland and Greybull to Cody.

If coming from the southeast consider driving up from Shoshoni through Thermopolis then over to Cody, it is a spectacular scenic drive though the Wind River Canyon on Hwy 20.

The drive through Wind River Canyon is not to be Missed.

Bonus Hot Springs - and a great CG on the River.

See it - Experience it - Don't drive after Dark, you will miss soooooooooo much!

Get to Casper then 26 to 20 north to Cody, absolutely the best route.
I went this way last summer & stayed at a real nice KOA in Casper & spent a couple of days in Cody.

If you are not taking in the Black Hills area going both ways you might consider US 20 though Iowa, Nebraska, and Wyoming to Shoshoni. There you can stay on 20 to Cody or take 26 to Moran which is between the Tetons and Yellowstone. The latter will take you along the Wind River which I consider a must.
