Grand Canyon South Rim To Yellowstone

How could one expect the road conditions the end of March? And will anything be open?
Thanks in advance.
Jesse

At the end of March, very little will be open in Yellowstone. In fact, snow travel on the roads will just be closing at the beginning of March. Roads don't open until much later. Getting from the South Rim to the Greater Yellowstone area is no problem, but YNP is 'open, but not accessible' at those dates.

Most all of the Yellowstone Campgrounds open June 1st as a rule, so I would base my travel on that. the weather is always iffy until that point. Like said before you can get to the Yellowstone area, but maybe not in the park based on the snow levels.

Mammoth campground in Yellowstone is open year-round.

Other campgrounds in the park begin opening May 1, such as Madison.

April 17 is the projected opening day for the road from Mammoth to Madison/Old Faithful. See the above link for all the road opening dates. Of course, this depends on weather conditions.

While this is true, access to the park interior is still seriously limited in March. You'd have to travel around the park, east side (I-25, Casper, Sheridan, Billings, then west and south, Livingston to Gardiner. Or N on I-15 to Butte, MT then east and south to Livingston. Of course once you get to Mammoth, the Grand Loop road is closed except to the NE entrance through Lamar Valley. No roads to Canyon, Norris, Old Faithful, Yellowstone Lake, etc. Last year, some of the roads weren't plowed until May --- with the help of communities outside the park that contributed plows to help open them for the season.

Yeah, it's kind of the awkward time for Yellowstone. Summer is spectacular and wonderful, and winter is even more spectacular, but the spring and fall are weird times. March would be possibly the worst time because there's a good chance of a big storm that will close down everything for a few days, and even make getting into and out of the area pretty treacherous.
