Grand Juction to Ouray Colorado

Hi - we are looking at workamping at Ouray this summer and wanted to ask about the drive down from Grand Junction into Ouray . We've read about the Million dollar highway going south out of Ouray with switchbacks and no guardrail in places so that route has been vetoed.

I've haven't read much about coming in from the north taking 50 from Grand Junction then 550 on into Ouray.

We are driving a 36 foot Journey with a Honda C-RV toad.

Thanks for any info.

Ben

Road south of Ouray is also fine for your rig if you want to expand your horizons a little once you finish your gig and want to head for Mexico for the winter. Best ignore the alarmists who aren't happy unless they are on a 6 lane interstate.

Thanks everyone! I'm sure the southern route is doable but it's just not for us. We once drove along the pacific coast highway in CA in a car no less and my wife was not happy looking over those drop offs right next to the tiny shoulder.

We stayed at Ridgeway SP which is N of Ouray last year. 3 out of the 10 days 550 was closed due to accidents, weather and one semi going over the side. We ended up backtracking to go south. I did see one Big Rig come down and he had a death grip on the wheel. There is a big sign suggesting all trucks take an alternate route. Good Luck
