Grants Pass to Crescent City on US 199.

Our group drove the route with 3 rigs the biggest being ours at 43'. We were nervous about the run but it turned out to be just fine. The best advice I can give is to use US197. If you are headed West bail out on 197 to get to 101........headed east take US197 to get on it as the first portion of US199 is very tight on the coast side. Go slow and have fun. We used the turnouts often to let the cars pass.

197 runs north from just West of Hiouchi, puts you out of way if going South.

Strange....state police said we were good to go. Just take it slow they said, there is not one sign on either side that has a size restriction.

South of O'Brien, just before the state line, is a big sign prohibiting MH over 40'. I drove the road last summer both ways and I remember seeing the sign on my return trip. Met a big 5ver right at the tightest curve on the road, right above the river. We both made it.

Another at the start of Hwy 1 West of Leggett.

Similar sign on Hwy 20 west of Ukiah, just after the Skunk RR tracks by the pallet sawmill. I've seen that one plenty of times. Easy to miss, if you are keeping your eye on the road.

I have a good friend that is a fire chief in Arcata. We've had this discussion a few times trying to plan a route to visit him. He says he often sees CHP shutting down over sized rigs, to the local towing company's delight. If you didn't get busted, consider yourself lucky.

There are no restrictions on US-199 from Grants Pass to Crescent City. Now remember we did bail off of US-199 at the 197 Junction to get down to the 101 because it does get extremely tight the last 4 miles . We were told that US 299 was a bit more tricky that is why we opted to go north into Oregon (diesel .30 cheaper) and then back down. There is a sign that talks about trucks and semi's....

Locally known as North Bank Road.
West end comes out north end of Dr. Fine bridge.
East end comes out at the east end of the bridge at Hyouchi.

>"headed east take US197 to get on it as the first portion of US199 is very tight on the coast side. Go slow and have fun. We used the turnouts often to let the cars pass."

IMHO: The worst section is the area just east of Patricks Creek. Have to go along cliffs, narrow road, no shoulder.
If you make it 'through' that, the section through the redwoods will be ok.

This was that section of 199 near Patrick Creek this morning. All clear now.

>"101 is doomed!"

Eh? 101 might be doomed (sliding into the ocean) at the 'Last Chance Grade'... south of Crescent City. Crescent City north... ok.

Both 197 & 199 are restricted to 40' or less. It is a fact but folks can decide what they want to do with that info.

I drove that route last June heading to Crescent City and then heading back to Grants Pass with no problems. My coach is 43' and I was towing my F150 supercrew. 65' overall length. Didn't know I wouldn't fit. Guess I got lucky.....
