Are you towing a trailer, 5th wheel, or Class A with toad? If you add that information in your signature by going to upper right of page "User CP" you'd only have to write it once.
From GB you could go straight down I-43 to I-94 through Milwaukee to I-294 around Chicago, I-94/80 to I-65 S in Indiana and to Indianapolis and S to Louisville, KY. Then take I-264 to I-64 E across to Lexington, KY to Charleston, WV and I-295 around Richmond, VA to I-64 again. At Newport News, VA, take I-664 to VA 168 (Oak Grove Connector)(Great Bay Bypass)(Chesapeake Expressway[TOLL])At NC it is still Hw 168 (Caratoke Hwy)becomes US 158 that goes to Kitty Hawk.

The route from Indianapolis to Lexington, can be through either Cincinnati or Louisville - all Interstate either way and essentially the same distance. However, there is a bridge toll in Louisville, and maybe less traffic on the Indy-Cinci route of I-74.
If you don't want to mess with Chicago traffic and the mess of the Tri State tollway, take I-43 from Milwaukee, then I-39 to I-74 to Indy. We used to do this coming from Milwaukee, and the additional 100 miles were a great trade-off for missing Chicago.

Chesapeake expressway toll
There are signs for the last exit before toll. Take second Hanbury Road exit, then 1/2 mile to Battlefield Blvd south. The expressway cost a fortune and only takes you about 5 miles after toll. I live here and use this to avoid paying the corrupt local Government. Your cost for using this is maybe 3-5 minutes. The toll road ends at the same point as Battlefield Blvd ends just a few miles from the NC border. You could make a quick stop at the border station before heading on to Kitty Hawk.
